The climate is always changing, but over the last 150 years, the human effect on climate has grown to exceed the magnitude of nature's influences. This presentation introduces the natural forces that have influenced the Earth's climate for the last million years, and presents records of the global climate derived from ice cores and other sources. Then, it describes the growing significance of human industry and agriculture in changing the chemistry of the atmosphere, and the resulting changes to the radiation balance, which ultimately results in excess warming. Forces in the system that may enhance or suppress the human-induced warming are described, as well as two possible futures: A global hothouse, or the dawn of a new ice age.
